The tennis ball thunked the wall, rattled the framed photo of Sharon and Hamish, and bounced back into Lance’s hand. He tossed it again. Thunk again. Bounce. Catch. Toss. Thunkbouncecatch.

Dee left the wagon full of hens and chickens on the path by the pepper tree and walked the long way back to the house, passed the largest pond and north to the path that connected the gate on Wood Road to the bluffs. She stopped on the way to check a field of cosmos where the first batch of pink and magenta flower heads had begun to wilt. She would gather seed in a few weeks and begin the fall seedlings. Dee ate a saltine to settle her stomach and went back to the house. From Con Ryan’s study she placed a call to the Whiterose offices in Connecticut. She identified herself, and asked to be connected with the company’s president, Ted White. She was a little surprised when the operator put her through immediately.

That morning Dee was in the garden shop before seven answering e-mail, paying bills, and installing new inventory software. There was plenty of work to occupy her mind. Even so, Victor and the taxes were wounds that continued to bleed through their bandages; and when Pinkus came in just before eight with Sweet Thyme in a baby-carry on his back, she was grateful for distraction, glad for someone to get mad at.

A thousand years ago when Dee and Victor went to court with Grandma and Grandpa, there were reporters and cameras. Later she saw a picture of herself holding Victor’s hand. The headline under it said, “Love Triangle Orphans.” That’s how Dee felt now, holding the bill in her hand. Orphaned.
