(Dictated by Dru to Art)
When I was five my mother, three-year-old brother, and I sailed from New York to Melbourne on the Merchant Marine Freighter, S.S. Rattler. This was the first U.S. ship to go through the Panama Canal and across the South Pacific after the Second World War. My Australian grandfather, who was at the time an executive working for British United Shoe Machinery, had secured passage for the three of us while my dad finished out his Navy stint in Australia. We’d be gone six months.
The Rattler sailed out of New York Harbor on a foggy night. The Statue of Liberty loomed off to one side but became partially obscured by another ship, plowing toward the sea. Passengers were lined up on its deck, waving. We watched as it maneuvered behind us, its outlines growing dimmer in the swirling fog.

When She Came Home

Costco! Why does it keep dragging me back when I can’t get my tequila wings anymore? Saturday I was picking up three restored photos I’d taken down from the gallery in the upstairs hall. One, a black and white publicity photo from more than thirty years ago, was turning yellow but when I retrieved it Saturday, it looked brand new.

“He’s mine.” She held out her arms. “I’ve been dying to hold him.” That much was true.

This was not working out the way Lance had planned. How could he guess that the cook had a gun and that the sissies would fight back? Maybe they were armed too. Joel said it was everyone’s right to keep firearms but surely there were limits.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the garden, a blue and white taxi with Arabic designs on the hood stopped in front of the Whitby house on Wood Road. Dee got out one side, Sam the other. By chance they’d both been on the early flight down from L.A. The forty-five minute hop gave her just enough time to tell him what she hadn’t the other day, no unpleasant truth spared. Dee wore the clothes she had been wearing when she drove away from the nursery. She had left her canvas tote behind in Eddie Mann’s office.

Sharon lay still on the carpet and listened with heightened senses to the sounds Lance made as he moved from one room to the next. She was perfectly calm, which surprised her. I should be screaming and pounding on the door, she thought. That’s the way a normal person would behave. From the kitchen she heard the freezer door open and shut and then the oven door slam. After a few minutes she smelled pizza and her stomach growled. She had eaten no dinner…

Sharon spent the rest of the afternoon at the market. Sam had done his best, with Lovey’s help, to keep the business going, but the premises showed signs of neglect. The storeroom needed sweeping and the deli display had sticky spots on the aluminum hot and cold trays. Sharon culled the fruit, putting aside the less than perfect specimens of grape and cantaloupe and kiwi for a fruit salad. Beginning immediately she would save scraps and throwaways for Dee’s compost. Eventually she and Dee might make enough compost between them to bag and sell. She imagined a kind of pre-Raphaelite label with From the Garden of Delight printed on it. To make sure she wouldn’t forget her idea, she dug around under the counter and found the spiral notebook where she wrote down good ideas. Her last entry had been months ago. For a long time there had been something brewing in her. In Lance too. They had been moving in opposite directions.

Lovey was at the market when Sharon got there a little later. She and Hamish were at one of the bistro tables playing checkers while Sam made sandwiches for a line of lunchtime customers.

Sharon sat at the top of the stairs and thought about the night before. First the miracle of Hamish’s return and then, an hour or so later, Sam and Lance had emerged from the garden, tired and downcast until they heard her news and rushed up the stairs to see the boy asleep in the middle of his mommy and daddy’s bed. Ignoring Sharon’s pleas that he be permitted – just that one time – to sleep between them, Lance carried Hamish to his own room and shut the door.
