Dee ate a saltine to settle her stomach and went back to the house. From Con Ryan’s study she placed a call to the Whiterose offices in Connecticut. She identified herself, and asked to be connected with the company’s president, Ted White. She was a little surprised when the operator put her through immediately.

That morning Dee was in the garden shop before seven answering e-mail, paying bills, and installing new inventory software. There was plenty of work to occupy her mind. Even so, Victor and the taxes were wounds that continued to bleed through their bandages; and when Pinkus came in just before eight with Sweet Thyme in a baby-carry on his back, she was grateful for distraction, glad for someone to get mad at.

A thousand years ago when Dee and Victor went to court with Grandma and Grandpa, there were reporters and cameras. Later she saw a picture of herself holding Victor’s hand. The headline under it said, “Love Triangle Orphans.” That’s how Dee felt now, holding the bill in her hand. Orphaned.

In the orchard Sam Green asked, “How much fruit do you get off these trees?”

 

“We pick enough to sell all summer long in Sharon’s market. We have nectarines and peaches now, more than we know what to do with. And in the winter there are oranges, of course. The Meyer lemons bloom all year.”

Dee watched Victor leave. Lance stepped forward and put his arm around her. She didn’t want it there but a sort of paralysis had invaded her body.

 

Lance asked, “What did that guy want?”

 

“It doesn’t matter. He’s gone.”

 

“I wouldn’t count on it.” Lance gave her a handkerchief but she wasn’t crying. She never cried. “I don’t think you’ve seen the last of him.”

Across the patio and vegetable garden, Sissypuss stalked along the low stone wall. He was a predator and yet so beautiful Dee could forgive him the occasional show of brutality. He brought in mice and lizards; he tormented a baby possum between his paws; and he left his bird kill on top of the refrigerator where she’d be sure to see it, but she loved him anyway.
